Ear Microsuction
What is Ear Microsuction?
Ear microsuction is a precise and effective technique for removing excess ear wax using gentle suction. Unlike traditional methods such as ear syringing or irrigation, which rely on water to flush out the ear canal, microsuction uses a specialised medical suction device, providing a safer and more controlled process. This method is widely considered the “gold standard” for ear wax removal due to its safety, accuracy, and ability to provide immediate relief for patients with minimal discomfort.
What is Ear Wax?
Ear wax, or cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It serves an important purpose, helping to protect the inner ear from dust, debris, and microorganisms that could cause infection. Ear wax typically moves outward naturally, eventually drying out and falling away from the ear canal. However, for some people, wax builds up and can cause discomfort, a feeling of fullness, or even hearing loss. This build-up may result from narrow or curved ear canals, excessive wax production, or the use of hearing aids or earplugs, which can trap wax inside the ear canal.
What to Expect During the Procedure
During an ear microsuction appointment, the process is straightforward and typically lasts between 10 to 30 minutes. First, the practitioner will examine your ear canal using an otoscope, a tool that provides a clear view of the wax build-up and allows for a detailed assessment of your ear health.
Once the assessment is complete, the microsuction procedure begins. The practitioner will use a small, precise suction device to gently remove the wax and any debris present in the ear canal. This technique is usually painless and allows the practitioner to work carefully while you remain comfortable. Unlike other methods, microsuction does not introduce any liquid into the ear, reducing the risk of infection and other complications. Most patients experience immediate improvement in hearing and a significant reduction in the sensation of blockage. In rare cases, a follow-up visit may be necessary if the wax is particularly stubborn or dense.
By choosing ear microsuction, patients can benefit from a quick, comfortable, and effective solution to ear wax build-up, restoring both hearing and comfort almost instantly.
Ear wax removal fee is £60.00 for both ears, if no wax needs to removed a £25.00 consultation fee will apply to cover the ear assessment.
