These symptoms can be caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve by various structures such as herniated discs or bony spurs in the lower back. It is important to try to identify the cause of the irritation to ensure effective treatment. It is also important to determine whether a patient’s symptoms are true sciatic symptoms or if it is actually a different nerve involved.
